Annual News Letter - 2006/2007

June 2006

 Dear Member/Friend of Auburn:

Another year has come upon us and at our Annual General Meeting on June 6, 2006 we elected our officers for the coming year; Stephen Peters, President; Dermot Foley, Vice President; Judy Baggett, Treasurer; and Brenda Lane, Secretary.

A concerted effort is being made to increase our membership for the coming year, as much of the work we achieve during the year is carried out with the help of membership fees and donations. Membership dues are just $10.00 per year and your participation by becoming a member will greatly help in preserving the memories of Auburn for future generations. Since the property we own is debt free any contribution you make will not be to service a debt but will directly promote the Museum and peripheral activities. Contributions/Membership dues can be sent to:

The Hogan barn is being widely used, displaying antique farm machinery and is also the location of our June yard sale. These machines will require much time and money for their restoration and we hope one day that we will all be proud of this display. The Soda Fountain from the old Auburn Drug Store has been moved to the Barn and we wish to set this up in time for the dedication of the Barn in early October.

The Candlelight Tour of Homes was once again a great success. The homes on display were Tommy and Emily Hayes, Dennis and Diane Pardue, Tim and Joyce Taylor, whom we are deeply indebted to; (all on Montgomery Road) and finally the Museum including the Old Greenwood School and the Old Auburn Jail. We look forward to visiting more homes on the tour, later this year, on December 3rd, 2006.

In February 26, 2006 Jonathan Jeffries of the Humanities Council gave a presentation on Duncan Hines. This performance was well attended and once again sponsored by the Logan Telephone Cooperative and the Kentucky Humanities Council to whom we are greatly appreciative.

Every month we are receiving new acquisitions and it would be difficult to list them all in this letter and in the coming months we will get pictures of many of them on our website at www.logantele.com/~aubhis/  One recent acquisition was a steamer trunk, which was once owned by William Gaston Coke (1895-1977) – this we were able to add to further memorabilia we have of the McCutchen/Coke families, including a World War I picture of W. Gaston Coke and a World War I hat of his. We also received some artifacts from the Nell Childress Estate which were donated by Liz Chisholm.

Our Book Club is going from strength to strength and is now in existence for over two years. We recently had our 2nd anniversary. We meet at 10:00am on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at the Museum. New members are always welcome.

In January this year we lost a very dear friend of ours; Ellsworth Strickler, who has gone across the great divide. Going back a few years he was a contributory speaker, to a full house, for the Charlie Sears Day, which was held in the Museum. His memory will always remain with us in the form of a stain glass window which was donated by the late Ellsworth Stickler’s associates at Strickler Stained Glass; directors & friends, and was dedicated on June 4th, 2006. For further details on this event visit: Dedication of Strickler Stained Glass Window

The Directors of the Auburn Historical Society, deeply appreciate all those who contributed in any way (monetary, artifacts or in kind) during the past 12 months to meet our Mission goals which are:

“The Auburn Museum's major function will be to discover, collect, preserve and exhibit materials which will help to establish or illustrate the history of Auburn and the surrounding communities.  Preserving Auburn's history is the Society's broad purpose.  More specifically it strives to promote the cultural and educational needs of its residents through community awareness.”

Remember: Your Membership dues will be greatly appreciated.

 Sincerely

Members of the Board of the Auburn Historical Society
