Corum Home

Grover & Mary Corum

163 N. Lincoln St.

Auburn

The home of Mary & Grover Corum was built circa 1862, and was referred to as the Waddle/McCarley House. Built as a two-story single-pile house with a side-passage plan and one –story rear ell, the two- story front porch was added about 1900. An interesting side note; the house sold at the courthouse door in 1873 for $ 310.65. Over the years many families lived in the house. The overall style of the house has had only a few minor changes. This is the most intact example of this house plan remaining in Auburn. A postcard dated 1917 shows the front of the house as it is today.

In May, 1957 the Corum family moved to Auburn and into the above home at 163 N. Lincoln St. Since that time the Corum’s have collected historical artifacts and family memorabilia that have made this home a collectors dream. Decorated in colonial style the home offers a relaxing atmosphere to enjoy a stroll through time. Available for viewing will be; a collection of over forty different designs of washboards, and over 90 different pieces of blue graniteware. There are South Union Shaker pieces as well as family items. Stain glass windows; some from church buildings that no longer exist, are beautiful reminders of other times and places. Walking up the brick walkway, surrounded by the ivy covered yard, you are at once reminded of Colonial Williamsburg.

Mr. and Mrs. Corum wish to extend a warm welcome to their home, and also invite you to step next door to view more of their collection housed there.

There are other related telephone items on display as well. Mrs. Elsie Carpenter will be there to demonstrate how the old switchboard worked when she was a young girl working for the phone company.

Loveall Home

Jeremy & Stephanie Loveall

239 Viers Street.

Auburn

This home dates back to the early 1800’s. The land that this home sits on has had but two names during its history, Black Lick Farm and the Sugar Maple Farm. It is believed that the one story back ell of this beautiful home was built by the Shakers of South Union who purchased this property in 1813. John Viers, who was a very prominent and important man to Auburn, purchased this property from the Shakers in 1838 and it is thought that sometime between then and 1860, Mr. Viers built onto the existing one story structure, making it into a more gracious home. Mr. Viers also gave some of the land to form the city of Auburn, but it was Mr. and Mrs. Curry Churchill Hall, the third owners that built the present two-story front piazza sometime in the 1940’s, thus giving the structure the appearance of a southern mansion.

Walking into this beautiful two story central passage home today will take you back to an era most of us can only imagine. You will find the décor of this beautiful home very eclectic, from primitive, country, antique to even shabby chic. The present owners, Jeremy and Stephanie Loveall purchased the property in October 2007, and to them, it is simply…..home.
