There are a lot of things in a person’s life that remains as good memories. Probably the number one would be the days spent at a country school. I spent eight years from 1925 to 1933 at Green Wood School in Simpson County. The education I received during those years would probably be the same as some high schools in later years.

We had good teachers, only two during my eight years. They were Mrs. J. W. Pugh and Miss Eliza Wilson. The school probably averaged 30 or so.

Recess was the best “subject” for some kids, playing marbles, baseball played with a homemade string ball, and “annie over”.

I guess my favorite subjects were arithmetic and geography. I have a map of the U. S. I drew I 1933 framed (in a frame I made from a barn gate). Geography probably helped me to do that. Also my work of making furniture had a good background of numbers and drawing. I owe that to Green Wood School

At the close of the eight grade I had to go to Franklin courthouse to take the final exam. I can remember when Miss Eliza Wilson went with me and as we went up the steps, she told me to take my cap off—some memory.

It will mean so much to many of us that are still around to have the School building preserved. We will be able to put keepsakes of school in it so youngsters could see the kinds of building where kids got their education in the “Old Days”

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Under the Greenwood school, you have a name wrong, as long as I knew my grandmother, while she was living, her name has always been Eliza Ann Smith ,, not Lisa Smith. Her twin named Lizzie is correct. Please make this correction.

I do appreciate that at least my grandfather Ed Coleman (William Edwin Coleman) and my grandmother Lisa Smith (Eliza Ann Smith) are at least somewhere in this site. My grandmother was a babysitter for most of the kids of this town. I do not understand why there isn't more information on the Coleman and Smith genealogy, Another question is : Why are they on the Other Students list? Isn't there a date that you can assign to those students. Although I know the families were not glamorous, they were still part of this history. Please do some further research.
